Flowers

A queen was beheaded once
for taking a flower
out of the hundreds
laid down
on a god’s altar.
Flowers rained from the sky that day
and turned red with her blood.
Everyone thought the god
was rewarding the king
for punishing one
who had stolen from him.
But, in fact, the god was just saying,
‘Why would you do something like that?
Look here –
I have plenty of flowers.’
